Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs, at room temperature

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup whole milk, at room temperature

Optional: powdered sugar for dusting or berries for garnish

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan or two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, approximately 5 minutes.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

In another bowl, whisk together the sifted all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined; do not overmix!

Pour the batter into the prepared pan(s), smoothing out the top with a spatula.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes for the round pans or 45-50 minutes for the rectangular pan, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

When the cake is completely cool, dust with powdered sugar or serve with fresh berries if desired.
