Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 teaspoon active dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)

1 tablespoon vegetable oil (plus more for frying)

1 cup honey

1/2 cup water (for syrup)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sesame seeds or crushed pistachios for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the flour along with the vegetable oil. Mix until the dough comes together. It should be slightly sticky but manageable.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Make the Syrup: While the dough is rising, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine honey, 1/2 cup water, and vanilla extract. Heat gently until it's combined and slightly thickened, then set aside to cool.

Shape the Lokma: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Using a small ice cream scoop or your hands, pinch off pieces of dough and form small balls (about the size of a walnut).

Second Rise: Place the dough balls on a floured tray and let them rest for about 30 minutes while you heat the oil.

Fry the Lokma: In a deep pan, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot (350°F/175°C), carefully drop in the dough balls, a few at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Drain and Coat: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried lokma from the oil and drain on paper towels. While still warm, dip each lokma into the honey syrup, allowing them to soak for a few seconds before placing them on a serving plate.

Garnish: Drizzle additional syrup over the lokma and sprinkle with sesame seeds or crushed pistachios if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
