Ingredients

1 large head green cabbage

1 pound ground beef (or turkey)

1 cup cooked rice (arborio or jasmine for a unique touch)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Cabbage: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the core of the cabbage. Place the whole head in the boiling water and blanch for about 3-5 minutes, or until the outer leaves become pliable. Carefully peel off the softened leaves and set aside to cool.

Make the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, grated Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Stuff the Leaves: Lay a cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the filling at the base of the leaf, fold in the sides, and roll tightly. Repeat this process with the remaining leaves and filling.

Arrange in a Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish. Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the rolls, ensuring they are well covered.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes for a slightly caramelized top.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
