Ingredients
  

8 oz whole wheat pasta (spaghetti or penne)

2 cups broccoli florets

2 tbsp olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

1/2 cup low-sodium vegetable broth

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Zest and juice of 1 lemon

Salt and black pepper to taste

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the whole wheat pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta and set it aside.

    Blanch the Broccoli: In the same pot, add the broccoli florets to the boiling water during the last 2 minutes of the pasta’s cooking time. Drain both the pasta and broccoli, then set aside.

      Sauté Garlic: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant.

        Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked pasta and blanched broccoli to the skillet, along with the vegetable broth. Stir to combine and add reserved pasta water a little at a time until you reach your desired sauciness.

          Add Flavor: Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice, zest, and Parmesan cheese (if using). Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
