Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Zest of 1 large orange

1/2 cup chocolate chips (dark or semi-sweet)

1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Mix until well incorporated.

Stir in the orange zest to the mixture, ensuring it is evenly distributed.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.

Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts (if using) until evenly dispersed throughout the dough.

Using a tablespoon, scoop out dough balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are firm and the centers look slightly underbaked (they will continue to firm up as they cool).

Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
