Ingredients

1 cup semolina

1 cup plain yogurt

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup almond slivers (for garnish)

Pinch of salt

1 cup water (for the syrup)

1 cup granulated sugar (for the syrup)

1 tsp lemon juice (for the syrup)

1 tsp rose water (optional, for the syrup)

Instructions

Prepare the Syrup: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 tsp of lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in rose water, if using. Let it cool.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch square baking dish or similar size.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the semolina, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the yogurt, melted butter, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the yogurt mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until well combined. Let the batter sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the semolina to absorb moisture.

Pour into Baking Dish: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. Score the surface with a knife into diamond or square shapes and place an almond sliver in the center of each piece.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Soak with Syrup: Once baked, immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot cake. Let it absorb the syrup for at least 30 minutes before cutting and serving.

Serve: Cut along the scoring lines and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy your delightful Basbousa with a cup of tea or coffee!
